Pillows have been with us for a long time, but they started off as a luxury item in the bedrooms of the wealthy and powerful. At times they have been banned (as in Tudor England, when women were only permitted to use them in childbirth) and they have been filled with material as diverse as wood (I've personally seen wooden pillows, in Samoa) and straw. And today, while many of them are standard bag filled with foam, there are a wide range of different pillows and the filling varies from natural feathers to man-made space age materials approved by NASA.
For side sleepers, a thicker, firmer pillow would be the most likely candidate to enhance your evening slumber. Pillows such a contoured memory foam pillow or a latex foam pillow are designed to provide the support between the bed and the head allowing a side sleeper to keep their neck and spine aligned. A softer pillow, for a side sleeper, would cause the head to slump and put strain on the neck.
Just as there is a wide range of pillow types (there are wedge pillows, neck support pillows and body pillows to help sleepers with physical problems, and feather pillows, water-based pillows, decorative floor pillows and kids novelty pillows) so we have an endlessly delightful range of pillow fabrics. My wife has some of these in a couple of our bedrooms and they look really good.
One very popular type of feather pillow is a down feather pillow, down pillows are filled with feathers from a goose. Goose down is the material that is located under the feathers of a goose and it is very soft. It is used in pillows because it provides a very luxurious feel as well as being very soft. This type of pillow is the most costly and for many people it doesn't provide enough neck support. But when you find that perfect feather pillow you will be guaranteeing yourself a restful night's sleep.
A cotton center pillow is another option you might also consider, this kind of pillow tends to be flatter than the other kind of pillows they also don't maintain their shape and therefore don't mold around your head and neck like some of the other types. Although many people really like their cotton pillows because they feel that they let the body rest as it naturally wants to and they will not trade their cotton pillow for anything and also use them faithfully without suffering any neck pain.
The place where you rest your head at night can mean the difference between a relaxing and rejuvenating sleep or an uncomfortable and unrestful ordeal. Therefore, it is vital to choose the right bed pillow that meets your needs for a good night's sleep that is comfortable and uplifts your energy levels.
