By now, you would have a fair idea that special types of pillows are available for health purposes however pillows can be purchased for various other situations as well. There are pregnancy pillows which can be used to support and aid a pregnant mother. If you travel often, you may find an airplane neck pillow particularly useful as they wrap around your neck and allow you to have a comfortable sleep irrespective of the motion of the vehicle. Travel pillows can also be used if you work long or late shifts for a quick power nap at work.
Back Sleepers are unique in that a firm, but soft pillow feels the best. Back sleepers need cervical neck support, but also need less pressure on the back of the head. Contour shaped pillows are perfect for this. They are designed with a valley for the head and an arch for the neck. The nice thing about that shape is that if you end up rolling to your side, you'd still receive the same benefit as a side sleeper. That is, support for the neck with less pressure on the head. Contour pillows are usually made from a pressure relieving memory foam.
The human neck curves slightly forward (to sustain the weight of the head upright), and it is very important to maintain this curve when in a resting position. If the height of the pillow is too high to sleep on their side or back, the neck is bent abnormally forward or to the side, causing muscle strain in the back of the neck and shoulders. This type of position may also cause narrowing of the air pipe, resulting in obstructed breathing, and sometimes snoring, which can hinder sleep. On the contrary, if the height of the pillow is too low, the neck muscles can also be enforced.
Talking about bedding there are many throws and decorative pillows available, and these will brighten up any bedroom or lounge. Again, this is an international idea; they are almost universal in Afghan and Pakistani homes, for example. These are decorated with fabrics and designs we in the West may not prefer, but they are used in much the same was we use them here.
Pillows have been with us for a long time, but they started off as a luxury item in the bedrooms of the wealthy and powerful. At times they have been banned (as in Tudor England, when women were only permitted to use them in childbirth) and they have been filled with material as diverse as wood (I've personally seen wooden pillows, in Samoa) and straw. And today, while many of them are standard bag filled with foam, there are a wide range of different pillows and the filling varies from natural feathers to man-made space age materials approved by NASA.
A pillow with a cotton filling is another kind. Such pillows are usually flatter than the other pillows, but they don't hold their shape and take the form of your head. Nowadays, cotton pillows are a choice of many people, as they confess their body rests better in its natural position with their help. If you prefer to sleep on this type of pillows it's better to change it instead of washing it. Cotton pillows become too flat with the weight of the body after some time. As a result, a pillow becomes water soaked when washed that makes a breeding ground for mold.
