Size is another area where the humble pillow is really far from uniform. There are body pillows and decorative floor pillows that are much bigger than the standard pillow at the end of your bed. Then, in the Middle East, in Egypt, long tube-like pillows are the norm. They are hard and narrow, reaching right across the width of the bed, and while they look inviting they are rock hard. Local people like them. You might be inclinded to have another opinion.
The thickness of the pillow is also important. It mostly depends on people's sleeping habits. A person sleeping on the side needs a thicker pillow while this one sleeping on one's back will like thinner pillows.
A large part of what makes a good pillow is personal preference. If the pillow is comfortable, is likely to help you relax, sleep well at night, and feel well rested in the morning. The surface of the pillow can also be a source of comfort - some people prefer a pillowcase with a fresh and soft (like cotton), some prefer warmth (such as flannel), etc.
The human neck curves slightly forward (to sustain the weight of the head upright), and it is very important to maintain this curve when in a resting position. If the height of the pillow is too high to sleep on their side or back, the neck is bent abnormally forward or to the side, causing muscle strain in the back of the neck and shoulders. This type of position may also cause narrowing of the air pipe, resulting in obstructed breathing, and sometimes snoring, which can hinder sleep. On the contrary, if the height of the pillow is too low, the neck muscles can also be enforced.
Apart from comfort, pillows offer a range of health benefits. Most pillows offer support for your spine and neck. Depending on the position in which you sleep, different pillows may be suitable. If you sleep on your back, you might be looking for a thin contour one to support your neck and spine. Apart from the universal benefit of the different pillows (supporting your neck and spine), there are certain pillows that specifically offer other types of health benefits. There are certain pillows that comprise of herbs such as Lupin. These benefit different areas of the body depending on where they are placed. Additionally, certain temperature sensitive pillows maybe used to offer temperature therapy. Another example of a therapeutic pillow is magnetic pillows. Magnetic fields are known to offer various health benefits such as improving the overall quality of your sleep, alleviating blockage and irritation in your sinuses and providing muscle relief by reducing strain.
While choosing a pillow the material that it's filled with is not the only thing you need to consider. Its size is very important too. Pillows may have different sizes and most of people choose a pillow according to the size of their mattress. People having the great-size bed usually choose a large pillow. The same concerns small beds and small pillows.
