If you have the right pillow under your head at night you will feel the best way during the day. Everybody knows that a person needs to have a healthy sleep in order to be in a good mood and health. But few of us know how to choose the correct type.
Based on body measurements and personal preference, the pillow should maintain a height of 4 to 6 inches, properly supporting the head and neck (and shoulders when lying on your back).
Then there is the huge range of specialized pillows offered to people with posture, health and snoring problems. There are neck support pillows, lumbar or knee pillows, back support pillows and buckwheat pillows; all of them useful for particularly physical ailments. Snoring? There are pillows that help some of us get over this embarrassing habit.
The human neck curves slightly forward (to sustain the weight of the head upright), and it is very important to maintain this curve when in a resting position. If the height of the pillow is too high to sleep on their side or back, the neck is bent abnormally forward or to the side, causing muscle strain in the back of the neck and shoulders. This type of position may also cause narrowing of the air pipe, resulting in obstructed breathing, and sometimes snoring, which can hinder sleep. On the contrary, if the height of the pillow is too low, the neck muscles can also be enforced.
By now, you would have a fair idea that special types of pillows are available for health purposes however pillows can be purchased for various other situations as well. There are pregnancy pillows which can be used to support and aid a pregnant mother. If you travel often, you may find an airplane neck pillow particularly useful as they wrap around your neck and allow you to have a comfortable sleep irrespective of the motion of the vehicle. Travel pillows can also be used if you work long or late shifts for a quick power nap at work.
Apart from comfort, pillows offer a range of health benefits. Most pillows offer support for your spine and neck. Depending on the position in which you sleep, different pillows may be suitable. If you sleep on your back, you might be looking for a thin contour one to support your neck and spine. Apart from the universal benefit of the different pillows (supporting your neck and spine), there are certain pillows that specifically offer other types of health benefits. There are certain pillows that comprise of herbs such as Lupin. These benefit different areas of the body depending on where they are placed. Additionally, certain temperature sensitive pillows maybe used to offer temperature therapy. Another example of a therapeutic pillow is magnetic pillows.
