The material you choose for your new pillow isn't the only decision you will have to make; size is something you will also have to consider. Feather pillows come in many sizes and many people make the decision of size based on the size of their bed. If you have a queen size you would also choose queen sized pillows, just like for your children who probably have a twin size bed you would choose a small standard size pillow. A good feather pillow of any size will assure you a good night sleep, and help you to wake up feeling rested.
Pillows are a constant source of frustration for many. In addition to aggravating the neck, lots of pillows can also affect the shoulder. The shoulder should not be placed at 90 degrees to the mattress, because it can cause spasms in the trapezius muscles.Trapezius muscles perform a variety of actions, including acting as a platform to raise the skull, which is very important to relax during sleep completely. If the shoulder is positioned slightly forward on the mattress in front of the bed, assuming that the mattress can hold this position, the risk of putting pressure on the trapezius and forcing the scapula (shoulder blade) to the column is reduced. By contrast, when in the 90 degree position, sleepers can wake up with neck pain and upper arm and altered sensitivity to little and ring fingers.
Another problem pillow buyers face is that of buying a foam pillow or a feather one. The main difference between these two is that foam pillows hold their shape better but they are not as comfortable as feather ones. Feather pillows are much softer and fluffy but you may find that every morning your pillow has lost its shape during the night and has transformed into something completely different that needs a shake to get it back to how it was. You will also need to be careful when buying feather pillows and ensure that any pillow you buy is hypo-allergenic to make sure it doesn't set off any allergies you may have.
Then there is the huge range of specialized pillows offered to people with posture, health and snoring problems. There are neck support pillows, lumbar or knee pillows, back support pillows and buckwheat pillows; all of them useful for particularly physical ailments. Snoring? There are pillows that help some of us get over this embarrassing habit.
